Constance Marie (Nestle) Bashaw – Shelburne

Constance M. Bashaw, 94, died Jan. 1, 2014, in her sleep, at her home, in Shelburne Bay Senior Living Community. Connie was born Aug. 17, 1919, in Amherst, Mass., daughter of Frank and Eleanor Nestle. She was a graduate of Amherst High School and Springfield Hospital Training School for Nursing in 1942. She married Dr. Donald “Doc” L. Bashaw in 1943 when she truly became his partner in life. Connie assisted Doc as his nurse in his private medical practice in Dorset and Wallingford, Vt. They always referred to her role as “his right-hand woman”. She assisted in all aspects from minor surgery to assisting families in whatever was needed – whether it was with a hug, a cup of freshly brewed coffee, a piece of her famous pecan pie, or assistance with writing an obituary and notifying family in the time of death. Her home was always open to anyone in need and everyone who entered was treated like a king or queen no matter what hour. Connie took an active role in the Wallingford Community where she was President of the St. Patrick Rosary Altar Society and served on various church and school committees through the years. When the private practice was closed, Connie became the first Patient Advocate at Rutland Hospital, designing the service based on other state’s programs. She then went above and beyond with what she felt patients and their families needed most when they were scared and unsure. She was known for her endless supply of energy when it came to helping people. She always had a smile on her face and a kind word for everyone whether she knew them or not. Connie loved her family, her home at Shelburne Bay, and the ocean at Hampton Beach, where on vacation she could be seen from 6 a.m. till dark, just enjoying the sights and sounds of the ocean. Connie is survived by three daughters, Judith (Charles) Seward of St. Albans, Carol (Ronald) Clardy of Hampton, N.H., and Nancy White of Westboro, Mass.; two sisters, Dorothy Nestle and Nancy Bak; and by a sister-in-law, Theresa Cerro. She has nine grandchildren; 13 great- grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Connie was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Donald Bashaw; her sister, Shirley McConnell; and sister-in-law, Gloria Humphreys. There will be no calling hours and there will be a private memorial service in Amherst, Mass., at a later date. Connie’s family would like to take this time to extend  heartfelt thanks to the entire Shelburne Bay Community, both employees and residents, for all their TLC in making Shelburne Bay Connie’s beloved home. For those who wish to remember Connie, please do an act of kindness in memory of her.
