Senators Patrick Leahy (D-Vt), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), and Congressman Peter Welch (D-Vt.) honored 27 Vermont nominees to the United States Military Academies at the Statehouse in Montpelier on Saturday, Dec. 28.

John Dwyer of Shelburne received a nomination to U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. An authorized nominating person, usually a member of congress, must officially nominate each candidate before they apply for acceptance to one of the nation’s service academies. The students anticipate hearing about their acceptance early next year.

A student at South Burlington High School, a member of the National Honor Society, and captain of his lacrosse team, Dwyer attended the U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar as well as the Norwich Future Leaders Camp.
