Thomas Coburn of Shelburne passed away on June 1, 2012, with his family by his side. He was born Sept. 22, 1941, in Amityville, N.Y., the son of Monroe and Grace Coburn. Tom always enjoyed the outdoors, especially if he was around the water. While attending college, he spent summers as a lifeguard at Gilgo Beach on Long Island, N.Y., where he took up surfing and opened a board rental shack on the beach. He later traveled to Hawaii to surf big waves on the North Shore of Oahu. Upon meeting his future wife there, they returned to Burlington where he became an avid outdoors man. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, vacations with friends, and became a skilled boatman, although somewhat notorious for regularly running aground in his relentless pursuit of fish. He developed a love of fly fishing, learning to tie his own flies and traveling to Costa Rico, Canada, Australia, Ireland, Brazil and the Florida Keys looking for the perfect spot. In 1976, Tom started Coburn Insurance Agency and two years later, he and Rich Feeley formed Coburn and Feeley Real Estate. Among his survivors are his wife and friend of 49 years, Jackie (Pratt); son, Whit Coburn and his wife, Patti and their children, Nicholas and Julia; daughter, Sarah and her companion, Todd Ellsworth. A memorial service to celebrate the life of Tom will be held on June 13 at 3 pm, at the All Souls Interfaith Gathering in Shelburne.
