Music theater camp in Shelburne returns

Kids rehearse a scene from a past summer music camp production.

Shelburne Players in cooperation with Shelburne Parks and Recreation Department have once again teamed up to put on their annual Summer Musical Theater Camp for kids at Shelburne Town Center. Openings are still available for kids aged 9-14 to sign up for a week long exploration in theater fundamentals that begins on Monday, July 30 and goes through Friday, August 3 from 9 am to 3 pm. Campers will explore the basics of musical theater, including making simple costumes, painting a set, and learning about character development, stage presence, and use of voice while rehearsing a short ensemble-based musical.  No previous stage experience is necessary. On the last day of camp students put on a musical skit in front of family and friends.
Camp director Tim Maynes and music director Nate Venet will be returning again to teach campers musical theater basics. Tim Maynes has extensive experience directing youth theater. He has been drama director at FHT Middle School in South Burlington and has taught/directed with FlynnArts, Lyric Theater, Champlain Arts Theater Company, Stowe Theater Guild, and South Burlington Recreation Department. Nate Venet is the music director for many area school’s drama departments, including FHT Middle School, South Burlington High School, Champlain Valley Union High School, and Mount Mansfield Union High School. He has also done musical direction for Lyric Theater and Stowe Theater Guild.
This year’s theater camp might be a good warm-up for auditions for Shelburne Player’s spring 2013 play “Anne of Green Gables,” which requires several children’s roles. Auditions for “Anne of Green Gables” are scheduled to be held in September or October and more information will soon be available at and through various media outlets, or email Shelburne Players at For more information on the 2012 Summer Musical Theater Camp in August go to or call Shelburne Parks and Recreation at 985-9551.
