Vietnam Vets host coin drop Saturday in Shelburne

Chapter #829 of the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA), Inc. will be holding a coin drop at the Shelburne Shopping Plaza exit on Saturday, June 14, from 8am to 3pm, come rain or shine. The chapter’s outreach is by no means solely aimed at Veterans of the Vietnam War; its assistance is made available to all Veterans—from World War II and Korea to those men and women returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

According to Perry, “We do not have clubs or paid staff of any kind at the chapter level. Since most Vietnam Veterans are also members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, and the American Legion, we use their facilities for meetings, but we are something of an ‘invisible’ organization.”

The money raised will be used to provide direct services such as the purchase of food and temporary shelter, transportation, and fuel oil assistance, while providing claims assistance for VA benefits including earned compensation, housing loans, and educational funds through the service officer program, where Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans make up the majority of the caseload.

According to Melvin, the VVA assists those researching veterans’ records, as well as soldier’s widows, widowers, and other family members in claiming all of the benefits to which they may be entitled.

Those who may are unable to donate at the coin drop can still assist the VVA by mailing a check to Vietnam Veterans Association Chapter #829 at 305 Olde Orchard Lane in Shelburne. For more information, Melvin can be reached via email at usmcdovt@yahoo.com.
