Barbara Ardelle Nichols Reed – Shelburne

Barbara Ardelle Nichols Reed, 85, born March 2, 1927, passed peacefully in The Arbors on June 22, 2012. Barbara enrolled in the Mary Fletcher School of Nursing after high school, graduating as a Registered Nurse. She worked in both Fanny Allen and Mary Fletcher Hospitals during her nursing career, leaving the hospital as head of the In-service Education Department. After graduating from the University of Vermont with a degree in Vocational Education and a minor in Heath, Barbara practiced her nursing skills over 37 years, ending her career as a school nurse and health educator in the Essex Junction school system. She was a member of Mary Fletcher School of Nursing Alumni Association, Alpha Delta Kappa Teacher’s Society, Vermont Teachers Association and Chittenden Retired Teachers Association. Before and after retirement, she and her husband, Hugh, enjoyed time at their Fairfield Pond Camp with the family and friends, giving many fun-filled parties for all ages. She loved making up games for everyone else to play and giving some unusual prizes at times. Barbara studied piano all of her life and as a young woman accompanied her father, Donald Richard, on violin with impromptu concerts. She continued to take piano lessons, playing at many of the family parties, eventually giving recitals in local nursing homes and lessons to her grandchildren. Later in life, she took up and became a very good at painting with water colors, exhibiting around Essex Junction and Williston. Barbara was a member of the Essex Art League, Northern Vermont Artists Association, as well as the Miniature Art Society of Vermont. Barbara leaves behind her children, and grandchildren. She was predeceased by her one and only Hugh, her husband of 59 years. Her burial will be at the convenience of her family. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Essex Art League.
