Nichole Caisse, math teacher at Mater Christi School, received word that three of her students were awarded certificates of merit for the posters they made for the 2012 University of Vermont Mathematics Awareness Week Poster Contest. These students are fifth graders Isabelle Tousignant, Patrick Tousignant, both of Shelburne, and Davis Lavoie of Burlington.
Karla Karstens of UVM who has been coordinating this contest for the past 23 years said that over 500 posters from 32 different schools had been entered in the contest. Karla said that she is always amazed at the creativity and cool art displayed in the posters. “It’s great to see students express ideas about mathematics in a different ways,” she added.
Caisse was impressed by the variety of ideas that emerged while the students were discussing how they would address this year’s theme, “Discovering Patterns.”
