The end of another successful EF Exchange Year was celebrated at the Shelburne home of John, Deb, and Jack Rooney and Italian exchange student, Luca Virga. The barbecue was enjoyed by EF students and their families and served as a fun and delicious wrap up to the year. Luca was the third student welcomed into the Rooney’s family, and he joined Jack at Champlain Valley Union (CVU) High School for his senior year. The family’s commitment not only to students who have become part of their family, but also many other exchange students who have found support and comfort in their home has been outstanding. Therefore, there is great satisfaction and pleasure to announce that Jack Rooney has been chosen as the first ever recipient for EF High School Exchange Year’s Global Education Excellence Scholarship Award. Jack’s ability to value and celebrate the similarities and embrace the differences between his brothers and sisters around the world has been beyond his years. He has shared his home, family, friends, and community with students from Germany, Austria, and Italy and the whole community has benefitted from the experience. Jack could see the possibilities of doors that would open for him and his family, and chose to explore them. He truly models EF’s mission of “opening the world through education.”
The EF Global Education Excellence Award is presented annually to high schools that demonstrate an extraordinary commitment to international understanding and global awareness. CVU is one of a select group of high schools recognized across the United States for the 2013-14 school year. In recognition for welcoming over 80 EF exchange students into its classrooms for the past 24 years, CVU has been chosen as one of only five superior schools nationwide to be awarded a scholarship for a graduating senior.
