This year’s Vermont Quilt Festival held last week at the Champlain Valley Expo featured more than 200 quilts, displaying the diverse talents of quilters from the United States, Canada, and abroad. The Governor’s Award for Best Vermont quilt was awarded to Mara Novak, of Chester, Vt. for her quilt “Hunter Star.” Contest Chairman Joanne Lattrell and Festival Chairman Richard L. Cleveland presented the Handi Quilter Best of Show Award to Christine Wickert of Penfield, N.Y. for “ Sampling the Silk Road,” and the Janome/Bittersweet Fabric Shop Award for Best Young Quilter to Kyla Perry of Montgomery, Vt. for “ Kyla’s Kwilt.” They also presented the Judge’s Choice award to Hope Johnson of Shelburne.
Johnson’s quilt, entitled “Mind Your Own Beeswax,” was an original design showing the layers of the beehive. Starting at the four corners and moving inward, Johnson’s quilt depicted capped honey, open honey, capped larvae, open larvae, open pupae, and egg cells, along with the queen and worker bees. The Judge’s Choice award is bestowed on the design that ranks as the personal favorite quilt of the particular judge.
