It took over 14 years but Vermont did it. For the first time since 1998, Vermont swept the annual Lions Twin State Soccer Cup on Saturday, July 21 at Franklin Pierce University.
The girls team captured its third straight victory with a rally in the second half to defeat the Granite State 2-1. The Green Mountain State boys broke a scoreless tie with a late goal to defeat New Hampshire 1-0.
In the opener, Champlain Valley’s Sara Lewis sent a through ball to Colchester’s Lauren Bernard who beat New Hampshire’s defense and scored a breakaway goal in the second half. She also assisted on Vermont’s tying goal in the first half.
U-32’s Jack O’Shea beat the New Hampshire goalie 1-on-1 to secure the win for Vermont with an assist by Champlain Valley’s Todd Forrester.
