Pierce Farrington of Shelburne set a state record in the 50-yard butterfly and won a total of four individual events and a relay to help the Burlington Country Club Swim Team finish third at the state meet on Aug. 4 and 5. Nearly 1,000 swimmers from more than 22 teams across Vermont meet annually at the end of the summer for the Vermont State Swim Meet at Upper Valley Aquatic Center in White River Junction. Pierce was not the only state champion from Shelburne.
Max Destito, age 7, was a state champion as a member of the boys U8 100-yard freestyle relay with Cillian Connolly, Kai Devoe-Talluto, and Luke Fitzgerald.
Ten-year-old Audrey Olson was also a state champion in the U10 100-yard freestyle relay with Ella Gazo, Kendall Muzzy, and Casey Allen.
Twelve-year-old Marley Olson swam on two state championship relay teams. Olson along with Caroline Saba, Avery Marti, and Grace Palmer won the 200 medley relay and the 200-freestyle relay with Palmer, Saba, and Olivia Smith. Olson earned 3rd in the 50-yard breaststroke and was within 0.01 seconds of second place. Grace Palmer placed 3rd in 11-12 girls 100-yard freestyle and Olivia Smith placed 3rd in girls U12 100-yard breaststroke.
Pierce Farrington, age 16, took 1st place in the 50-yard freestyle, 50-yard breaststroke, 50-yard butterfly (state record), 50-yard back, and 200-yard freestyle relay with Sam Boardman, Johannes Suppan, and Ben Ogle. Pierce also swam fly in the second place U18 medley relay with Boardman, Suppan and Ogle. When not setting state records, Farrington can be seen encouraging younger swimmers.
