Cornelia “Connie” Smith Carpenter died Aug. 24, 2012, in Fletcher Allen Health Care, surrounded by loving family. Connie was born Jan. 30, 1926, in Burlington, the daughter of Joseph Thomas and Hallie Lane Smith. She attended Adams Elementary School and Burlington Junior and Senior High Schools. Connie graduated from Middlebury College in 1946. After graduation she worked at Filene’s in Boston as an assistant buyer, then in the Registrar’s Office at UVM. Connie married John Taggard Carpenter, a childhood friend and neighbor, on June 14, 1947, after he returned from the war. They raised their family in Essex Junction, Johnson, and then for many years, in Burlington. In 2004, Connie and John moved to Wake Robin in Shelburne. Connie was active in many community activities serving in a number of volunteer leadership capacities. She was the first woman president of the College Street Congregational Church, where she and John have been active members together since marriage. Connie was a supporter of the Lund Home for decades, serving as Chair of the Board of Directors. She served on the boards of the Flynn Theatre, The United Way of Chittenden County, RSVP, and HomeShare Vermont. She was a supporter of the Vermont Symphony, Lane Series, The Medical Center Hospital of Vermont, and was a volunteer driver for Meals on Wheels. She and John were founding members of the Burlington Tennis Club and avid tennis players. Most of all, Connie was a loving and gracious wife, mother, “gramma,” and friend. She had an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel special. Her generous “cookie jar” was always full and awaited her children, grandchildren, and visitors. In addition to her husband, John, of 65 years (and had known for 86 years), Connie is survived by her five children and their families, Christopher Carpenter and wife, Claire, Debra Wood and husband, Robert, Kim Stege and husband, Kurt, John (Tag) Carpenter Jr. and wife, Nancy, and Scott Carpenter and wife, Lisa; 12 grandchildren, Catherine Smith and Conor Carpenter, Amanda Snow and Rachel Perkins, Hope and Hans Stege, Hallie, John III and Hannah Carpenter, and Caroline, Hayden, and Reed Carpenter; five great-grandsons, Everett and Declan Snow, Henry and Colin Perkins, and Finn Carpenter Smith; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Carpenter. She was predeceased by her brother, Sidney Smith; and sister, Josephine Baker. The family would like to convey a special thanks to those that cared for Connie, including Drs. Marie Sandoval and Chris Herbert, the wonderfully caring staff at Wake Robin, her team at Fletcher Allen this week, including Drs. Sadie Mills and Jason Bartsch, the very special nurses on McClure 5, and Barb Segal and the FAHC Palliative Care Team. The date(s) and time(s) for a memorial service(s) will be forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, gifts in Connie’s memory may be sent to the Lund, PO Box 4009, Burlington, VT 05406, or the College Street Congregational Church, 265 College St., Burlington, VT 05401.
