Healthy aging initiative supports senior nutrition
“Eat Well Age Well,” a program sponsored by Hunger Free VT, United Way of Chittenden County, and CVAA is seeking volunteers who are age 55-plus to fill “Nutrition Corp” positions in outreach activities throughout Chittenden County. The “Eat Well Age Well” program connects seniors with peer volunteers to help them apply for 3SquaresVT, a federal nutrition assistance program. The goal of the innovative is to grow a team of 55-plus “Nutrition Corps” volunteers who will be given the tools and training to reach out to their peers to talk about the importance of nutrition and how 3SquaresVT can help seniors afford fresh, healthy foods. In addition to helping with applications for 3Squares VT, volunteers will share program information and ongoing support to ensure maximum benefits and program knowledge.
While 3SquaresVT is the nation’s best defense against hunger; only 30 percent of eligible older Vermonters take advantage of what it offers. “Proper nutrition is a key to helping seniors stay healthy, active, and independent and 3SquaresVT gives eligible older Vermonters extra money to help them buy fresh, healthy foods,” notes Faye Conte, 3SquaresVT Advocate at Hunger Free VT.
