If you’re in the market for a new and improved wardrobe, Kara Alnasrawi can help you out. The Shelburne native recently opened a clothing store in the heart of downtown Burlington called Liebling, which means “favorite” or “darling” in German.
Liebling is located at 198 College Street in the space previously occupied by Downtown Discs. “Downtown Burlington is very vibrant,” Kara said. “I’ve always wanted to open a clothing store.” Kara said she has been working on the project for about a year, although “it seems like longer,” she added.
Born and raised in Shelburne, Kara traveled far from the Green Mountains after attending Champlain Valley Union (CVU) and studying political science and German at UVM, where her father taught economics for 40 years.
Kara left the Vermont area for about 20 years, living and working in New York and Germany. “I lived in Europe for 10 years,” she said, “and I’ve been very influenced by European style.” Liebling carries bags from Germany, leather jackets from Italy, and more. Kara said her goal in opening the store was to fill a niche she felt was missing in Burlington. “I would describe the clothing as clean and contemporary,” she said. “The pieces have a hint of luxury and are understatedly sexy.”
Kara previously worked as an investment banker and is an Adjunct professor currently on leave at Burlington College. She is also treasurer of the Charlotte Children’s Center.
Interests/Hobbies: “I have a 5-year-old in kindergarten at Shelburne Community School, so I like to do the things he likes to do. I also go on buying trips to New York and I try to get to Europe at least once a year.”
Favorite food: Pizza. Kara also enjoys cooking Mediterranean and Italian food.
Favorite Shelburne Haunt: The bar at The Bearded Frog.
Most memorable concert: “Seeing Lucinda Williams in London. I was seven months pregnant!”
