On Thursday, Sept. 20 at 6:30 pm, Shelburne’s own gardening expert Charlie Nardozzi will speak at the library. We are excited to once again present gardening expert and author, Charlie Nardozzi, in a program co-sponsored with the Charlotte Library. The days are growing noticeably shorter and the weather is growing more fall-like. Do you want to know what to do in your garden at this time of year? Charlie will be here to give you some suggestions in his presentation titled “Extending the Gardening Season and Getting Ready for Fall.” Charlie will also be talking about his latest book, “Northeast Fruit & Vegetable Gardening.”
The Pierson Library is celebrating 30 years of banned books during the month of September. Our latest monthly book display features titles that have been banned or challenged, some wrapped in plan brown paper wrappers! You might be surprised at the title you see under that brown paper. We are also holding a kid’s scavenger hunt with a prize of a coupon for one free book at the Friend’s annual book sale on Oct. 6 and 7. Ask at the front desk if you want to participate in the scavenger hunt. Check out our Facebook page for updates on banned books throughout the month.
Come in and take some time to enjoy the fabulous quilts displayed in our latest library art exhibit. For the next two months we are thrilled to showcase 10 amazing and creative theme quilts from “Once Upon a Time,” the 2011 theme challenge at the Champlain Valley Quilters’ Guild Show. Guild member and former reading teacher, Ruth Whitaker, suggested the theme as a challenge to guild members to pair quilting and literature in an original quilt. The members then voted for the quilt that best represented the theme and “The Night Before Christmas,” “Brothers at War,” and “Tristan and Isolde” won first, second, and third ribbons respectively. At the guild’s judged quilt show, “Tristan and Isolde” won Best of Theme.
The Pierson Library book group will reconvene after summer break on Tuesday, Sept. 18 in the library conference room. This first meeting of the year will be held at 6 pm instead of the usual 6:30 pm. New members are more than welcome to join us. We will be discussing the book, “The Age of Miracles” by Karen Thompson Walker. We are also sharing the best books that we read over the summer and planning our scheduled reads for the upcoming 2012-2013 season. Our book group will meet again on the third Tuesday of every month from October through June at 6:30 pm. Call Linda at 985-5124 or stop in next time you visit Pierson Library if you have any questions about our book group.
