It’s that time of year again! The 48th Annual Pierson Library Book Sale and the Shelburne Fire Department and Firefighters Pancake Breakfast is approaching. The Book Sale will be held Saturday, Oct. 6, from 9 am-5 pm and Sunday, Oct. 7, from 10 am-3:30 pm at the Shelburne Town Center Gym. Run by The Friends of the Pierson Library, the Sale welcomes book donations through the end of September. The Pancake Breakfast will also be held on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 7:30 until 11:30 am at the Shelburne Fire Station to coincide with the annual Sale which has many volunteer opportunities from Oct. 4-7.
Local residents donate books each year. “Some people pass on brand new books to us as soon as they’ve read them, while others donate a lifelong collection all at once,” said Pat Elvin of The Friends of the Pierson Library. “Many attend our sale for the chance of discovering a valuable collectible. We try to price them appropriately on the stage and also offer some in a silent auction.”
Elvin said the Sale’s highest auction record was over $200, adding that they average about 15,000 volumes each year. The Sale will also offer audio books, DVDs, CDs, puzzles, and games. Prices range from $ .25 to $1.50, not counting the special collections on the stage. All proceeds go to benefit the Pierson Library.
“It’s truly amazing when everyone turns out Thursday night before the sale to move literally tons of books by the dump truck load,” Elvin said. “The Friends would not be able to run this sale without our many volunteers including Boy Scout Troop 602, the Highway Dept, and the many others who volunteer their time and muscle to make this sale a success.”
