On Wednesday, Oct. 10 the Vermont Commons School in South Burlington welcomed retired ABC news commentator Barrie Dunsmore of Charlotte as a featured guest speaker. He spoke to the students about his storied career as a foreign correspondent and took their questions about the recent unrest at U.S. Embassies due to the anti-Islamic film produced in the U.S., various aspects of recent Middle Eastern history: the Arab Spring revolutions and America’s wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the approaching presidential election.
Over the course of his career, Dunsmore reported from the scene of pivotal events of the 20th century including the capture of the Suez Canal by Israeli troops, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the assassination of Anwar Sadat, and the onset of the Gulf War in 1991. He has recently written a book, “There and Back: Commentary by a Former Foreign Correspondent,” which highlights his reporting from Washington and overseas on the foreign policies of seven sitting U.S. presidents.
