Rene Joseph Berard, 92, died peacefully at his home Friday morning, Nov. 2, 2012. Rene was born the oldest of 12 children, Dec. 24, 1919, in Mariesville, P.Q. Quebec, the son of Ulric and Zepherine (Angers) Berard. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during W.W.II, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant prior to being discharged to accept a commission. He was released from active duty in 1945 and joined the Army Reserve, serving continuously from then until 1978, retiring as a Colonel. Returning home, Rene married June Adeline Quinn on Jan. 4, 1947, and together they began their family. Rene was involved in many organizations throughout the years. He served in the State Legislature and on the South Burlington School Board. He founded Berard Construction in 1959, responsible for the construction of many large projects. He retired from Berard Construction in 2008. Among his survivors is a son Allan Berard of Shelburne, and a brother Raymond and wife, Jackie, of Hinesburg. Rene was predeceased by his son, Randy; grandson, Mathew Burke; sisters, Simone Parent and Olivette O’Brien; and brothers, Henry and John Paul. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012, at noon in St. John Vianney Catholic Church in South Burlington. Burial will follow in Resurrection Park Cemetery.
