Mary Elizabeth Cirino, born Oct. 28, 1917, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012, in Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, after an extended illness. As a young woman, she chose to pursue a career in science at a time when most women stayed at home. She received her doctorate in Marine Biology and conducted most of her research at Woodshole Oceanographic Institute in Massachusetts. She was Professor Emeritus at Bridgewater State College, Mass., and was known for her passion in fostering a love of science, the ocean, and the outdoors in both her students and young people in general. Stories of her adventures will entertain family and friends for generations, and she will be sorely missed by all her knew her. Mary is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, MaryBeth and Tony Pinard-Brace of Shelburne; grandchildren, Alanna Pinard-Brace of Shelburne, and Ariana and Jeff Drown of Middlebury; great-grandchildren, Alexis and Piper Drown of Middlebury; brothers, Robert and Frank Fahey of Arlington, Mass.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. A private family funeral service will be held at a later date.
