A special holiday appeal to Shelburne families
|December 5, 2012||Filled under Our Town||
The faculty, staff, and families at Shelburne Community School (SCS) work diligently to make sure that all students have what they need to best access their education and feel well-connected to the school community. One way we are able to do this is through The Angel Fund. This special resource was established over 10 years ago to help families in critical financial need and has been generously funded by the Shelburne churches, SCHIPS, the SCS PTO, SCS families, and other Shelburne residents. Typical reasons for funding include supporting homeless families with very basic needs, gas cards for medical appointments, defraying costs for appliance and auto repairs, partial scholarships to summer camps, and after school activities and programs. The Angel Fund is overseen by the SCS administrators and counselors who make all funding decisions as a group. It is a tribute to the generosity of our community, that even in these challenging economic times donations have continued at a steady level these past few years. However, the number of students in need has increased markedly in recent years. Whereas five years ago five percent of our students qualified for free and reduced lunch, this year that number has grown to 15 percent. As a result we are finding it difficult to fund a growing number of legitimate requests.
All donations are greatly appreciated, no matter the size. If you would like to help, please respond by December 31st. Checks can be made out to SCS Angel Fund and mailed directly to Allan Miller/Pati Beaumont, SCS School Principals, Shelburne Community School, 345 Harbor Rd, Shelburne, VT 05482. Your tax-deductible donation will stay right here in Shelburne!
