The Vermont Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association (VSSA) elected Champlain Valley Union (CVU) senior Taylor Spillane as the High School Female Athlete of the Month for October. The VSSA also chose another standout high school cross-country runner and a prolific college quarterback as its athletes of the month for October. Mount Anthony Union senior Marc Brandmeyer was awarded High School Male Athlete of the Month and Castleton State College senior Shane Brozowski was selected as the Open Division Athlete of the Month.
Each was nominated by a VSSA member, Spillane by Josh Kaufmann of the St. Albans Messenger, Brandmeyer by Adam Samrov of the Bennington Banner, and Brozowski by Jack Healey of the Northeast Sports Network.
Spillane cemented her place as CVU’s all-time top distance runner in October by setting a new course record and winning a second straight Thetford Woods Trail title (by 42 seconds in a field of 585 from throughout the Northeast), finishing sixth (among 2,335) in the elite Manhattan Invitational, and claiming her first district and Division I state (by 15 seconds) championships. CVU Coach Scott Bliss called Spillane “by far the most accomplished” runner in a program that won back-to-back New England team championships in 2010 and 2011.
