Shelburne’s John Welsh and the area’s Marine Corp League are at it again. The bright red “Toys for Kids of Vermont” barrels have been placed throughout Chittenden County in local retail establishments waiting to be filled with donated new, unwrapped toys that will be distributed to local children in need in time for Christmas.
Two years ago Welsh created a mini-coin drop barrel in hopes that patrons of local businesses will drop in their loose change in support of the cause. These coin barrels can be found locally at The Dutch Mill and Village Wine and Coffee in Shelburne.
“There have always been businesses that would be more than willing to have one of the big barrel in their shops, but just don’t have the room,” Welsh offered. “This seemed like a good way to have those businesses take part in helping Toys for Kids. And we need all the help we can get.”
That help will ensure that families in need during the holiday season have a source for gifts for their children. Welsh works with the Salvation Army, the Amani Center, Joseph’s House, and food shelves in order that Toys for Kids of Vermont organizers pinpoint families in need during the holiday season. The toys and funds donated are earmarked specifically to needy children in towns throughout Vermont.
Toys may be donated until distribution time (Dec. 21 this year). Of the approximately 200 barrels placed throughout Chittenden County, barrels in Shelburne can be found at the following businesses:
Mountain Air Cleaners
Route 7 Liquor and Deli
The Field House at Shelburne Health and Fitness
So as you are out shopping for toys this year, add one to your cart for the red barrels. The Marines will make sure it gets into the hands of the right little ones. Also, please consider making a financial donation in a coin barrel. While your loose change is greatly appreciated, Welsh says he would also like to see “some of the folding stuff” in the small barrels. Checks can also be made out to Toys for Kids of Vermont, Post Office Box 4092, Burlington, Vt., 05406-4092.
“The cash donations allow us to go out and shop for toys for specific age groups. Some years we need more for the younger kids, and some years, the older kids. I’m hoping that between the coin barrels and checks mailed in we will have enough money to work with.”
