Redhawk wrestlers storm Hubie Wagner Invitational
Following this year’s biggest snow storm, a new storm emerged. Nine Redhawk wrestlers stepped on the mat Friday, Dec. 28 at the Hubie Wagner Invitational Wrestling Tournament with something to prove. Tough teams from all over Vermont and New York were there to do the same. After 10 hours of grueling competition, CVU tied for fifth place, just behind tough out-of-state teams from New York, proving once again, that the CVU squad is a dominant force in Vermont for the second year in a row. “Our intense training is finally showing itself on the mat. We were aggressive, technical, and fast,” coach Olson said about the team.
Despite being down several starting upperclassmen, the up and coming freshmen stepped up and scored critical team points. By the end of the day, Liam Bowely (senior, Williston) at 106 lb. and Alex Legg (sophomore, Williston) at 126 lb. were in line for individual championship titles.
After dominating his way through the competition, number one seed Bowely made quick work of his finals opponent capturing his first title of the year. Legg finished in second place after a hard fought strategic match.
Zack Gregory (132 lb.), Connor Gobielle (152 lb.), Connor Brown (160 lb.), Rob Brangan (170 lb.), Kienan Kittredge (182 lb.), and Troy Bergeron (195 lb.) also contributed to the successful day.
