Rice cooks Redhawks


Rice’s Casey Tipson scored 41 points to lead Rice over Champlain Valley 57-39 on Friday, Jan. 11. Lucas Aube led the Redhawks in scoring.

Nordic skiers win classic race

The Champlain Valley Union Nordic team took first place at the first 5K classic race of the season on Jan. 9 at Sleepy Hollow. Taylor Spillane led the team to victory with a first place finish, followed by Autumn Eastman in third, Emma Hamilton in fourth, Cally Braun in seventh, and Kayla Servin rounded out the Top 10. On the boys side Forrest Hamilton took first place. Emmett Peterson followed with a third place finish, Marvin Muller (fourth), Sam Longenbach (sixth), Parker Francis (seventh), Thomas Clayton (ninth), and Charlie Maitland (tenth).


Gymnasts fly high

The Champlain Valley Union gymnastics defeated Randolph meet at Green Mountain Gymnastics in Williston on Wednesday, Jan. 9. CVU earned 131.25 points overall, while Randolph scored 111.75.


Boys ice hockey team bounces back

After a 2-1 loss to Essex last weekend the Champlain Valley Union boys hockey team defeated Spaulding 4-3 on Wednesday. Jack Hall knocked in two goals while Jeremy Lerner and Hoyt McCuin picked up one goal apiece for CVU. Greg Talbert made 14 saves for the (5-2-1) Redhawks.


Hockey team stays positive despite defeats

The Lakers beat up on the Redhawks 9-1 at Leddy Park Arena on Wednesday, Jan. 9.Three days later Hartford defeated Champlain Valley 4-2 in girls ice hockey action. Randi Lynn Katon and Molly Dunphy each scored for the winless Redhawks on Saturday.


Alpine teams make podium

The boys alpine team placed second and the girls placed third at Cochran’s on Wednesday, Jan. 9. CVU boys top 10 (combined two runs): 6. Boomer Vazquez, CVU, 1:21.81; 7. Ted Hadley, CVU, 1:23.71; 9. Mark DesLauriers, CVU, 1:23.89;  Top-10 girls (combined two runs): 6. Emma Putre, CVU, 1:27.18.


Redhawks wrestlers continue winning

106 pounds: Liam Bowley, C pinned Nate Gebo, M 1:44. 113: Brandon Tieso, C pinned Kyle Desabrais, M 2:58. 132: Alex Legg, C pinned James Whitley, M 3:47. 160: Connor Brown, C pinned Nick Beauchamp, M 1:34. 170: Grant Poston, C def. Skyler Shute, M 5-3. 182: Jakob Trautwein, M pinned Kienan Kittredge, C 1:30. 195: Gabe Laberge, M pinned Troy Bergeron, C 0:39. Middlebury won by forfeit at 220 and 285. CVU won by forfeit at 120, 138, 145, and 152.


Girls basketball on 6-0 run

CVU girls basketball team put another notch in the win column with a 45-27 victory over BFA St. Albans Thursday, Jan. 10.
