Gretchen Garvey, a teacher at the Shelburne Community School, was recently awarded two grants to use for continuing education. Shelburne Charlotte Hinesburg Interfaith Project (SCHIP) awarded Garvey a $2,000 grant to take part in a year-long Mindful Education Institute. Numerous studies show that teaching mindfulness practice is profoundly beneficial for the development of children in grades K-12. When learned young, these become lifelong tools supporting awareness, empathy, and resilience. The second grant for $1,000 was provided by Talk About Wellness, www.talkaboutwellness.org, which works to achieve greater wellness, resilience, and mindfulness in public schools. This second grant was made possible by Holly Johnson of Wind Ridge Publishing and Ron Seeley of the Ferguson Foundation.
