Shelburne resident, Evan Trombley, age 12, rose above his peers to win the all-around competition, floor and pommel horse for level V boys at the winter invitational gymnastics meet, held at Brentwood Commons in Exeter, N.H on Jan. 12-13. More than a dozen boys teams and more than 100 boys from Rhode Island, Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire competed in six events: rings, parallel bar, high bar, vault, floor, and mushroom/pommel horse.
Evan, a homeschooler, trains at Green Mountain Gymnastics (GMG) in Williston. He began his training a little more than a year ago under Stefan Hruska, who trained gymnasts in his native Slovakia before coaching at the University of Vermont (UVM). The current UVM coach, Bob Abbott, joined GMG this past summer to make it the region’s premiere boys gymnastics program, as evidenced by the teams 4th place finish out of 15 teams. This is the best performance of any boys gymnastics team from Vermont in more than 30 years.
Will Noonan, age 10, also of Shelburne, competed on the level IV team for GMG and had a distinctive performance on the vault, where he earned a 7th place finish.
