Gymnasts miss crown for second year
The Champlain Valley Union gymnastics team nearly dethroned Essex for the crown last Saturday, Feb. 23 in Essex. In fact, they only missed first place by .15 points but the Redhawks were not disappointed. Instead the team felt like they competed better than a year ago, especially on the beam, where they prevailed over the Hornets.
CVU girls cook Rice, improve to 20-0
The Champlain Valley Union girls basketball team recorded its first undefeated regular season and locked up the top seed for the Div. I tournament with a 51-43 victory over Rice last Tuesday night in South Burlington. Freshman Laurel Jaunich tallied 13 points to lead CVU while Emily Kinneston and Elspeth Grasso added 10 points apiece. The Redhawks will play the winner of BFA St. Albans and Burr & Burton on Friday, March 8 at 7 pm at home.
CVU girls alpine team places fourth at states
CVU sophomore Emma Putre of Shelburne gave it her all at the girls alpine state championship on Monday, March 4 in Stowe but it wasn’t enough. She placed second (47.78) in the giant slalom and sixth in the slalom. CVU freshman Emma Owens placed 15th in the slalom. The boys state meet took place on Wednesday, March 6 at Okemo.
Boys hoops team bounced in first round
The Champlain Valley Union boys basketball team fell in overtime 50-48 to Spaulding in the first round of the Div. I playoffs last Tuesday, Feb. 26 in Barre. Brad Bissonette tallied 19 points to lead the Redhawks.
Wrestlers excel at New Englands
The following wrestlers, Liam Bowley 106 lb., Alex Legg, 126 lb., Connor Brown, 160 lb., and Grand Poston, 170 lb., placed in the top three in their weight classes at the state tournament last weekend and competed in the New England Finals in Providence, R. I. March 1-2. At New Englands the Redhawks excelled. Connor Brown placed fifth, and the Redhawks had the most qualifiers and the highest team score in the history of CVU wrestling.
Boys hockey team advances
Third seeded CVU defeated sixth seeded Rutland 6-1 in hockey action during the first round of the state championship tournament Tuesday, March 5 at Cairns Arena. Patrick Patterson scored twice and had one helper, Patrick Keelan, Ryan Keelan, and Jack Hall each contributed a goal and an assist. Brendan Gannon scored one and goalie Greg Talbert made 19 saves.
Girls hockey team ends season
BFA St. Albans crushed CVU 14-0 during the first round of the Div. I playoffs on Tuesday, March 5 at Collins Perley Arena. Laurel Hubbert-Severance made 29 saves for Champlain Valley which ended its season 1-20-1.
