Town officers’ training planned for April

For nearly 70 years, veteran town officials and those new to their positions have gathered annually for updates on tax laws and to learn about new technologies, municipal recordkeeping, and effective strategies for handling planning, zoning, and other town issues. Known as the Town Officers’ Educational Conferences, these meetings help town clerks, listers, selectboard members, and others who govern Vermont’s towns and cities do their jobs better.

The conferences, offered in April at three locations this year, are organized by University of Vermont Extension and participating agencies. Registration is $70, with a $10 discount for online registrations, and covers lunch, morning and afternoon refreshments, and a choice of five concurrent workshop sessions.

Venues include the Hilton Burlington Hotel, Burlington (April 3); Lake Morey Inn, Fairlee (April 17); and the Killington Grand Resort Hotel and Conference Center, Killington (April 24). All meetings run from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm with on-site registration beginning at 8 am.

The keynote session will be a panel discussion on effective communication within town offices and between town governments and citizens, including how to use technology to more effectively manage information. Several concurrent workshop sessions also are planned on a diverse range of topics including disaster relief, grand lists and current use, implementation of actions in town plans, managing public access to documents, engaging youths in community change, civic engagement using slow democracy processes for pressing community issues, natural resources mapping, and other issues of interest to town officials.
