The CSSU Hurricanes wrestling club is busy. Over the past three weekends, the club of students from Hinesburg, Shelburne, and Charlotte in grades K-8, competed in tournaments statewide beginning March 9 at Otter Valley High School. Matthew Smarden, a first grader at Shelburne Community School (SCS), took home a first place medal while Owen Palmer, a fifth grader at SCS, snagged third place. As a team, the Hurricanes scored 56 points to the opponent’s 26. On March 16, the team traveled to Mount Mansfield High School where Smarden garnered a third place finish and Palmer placed second. On Sunday March 17, the team traveled to St. Johnsbury where Smarden won third place and the team scored 95 points. Last weekend, March 23, Smarden took home a second place medal at Milton Elementary School. The club also traveled to Vergennes High School Saturday, March 30 for a match.
