Charles Henry Smith, 83, went to be with the Lord on April 8, 2013. He was born Jan. 22, 1930 to Henry John and Mercedes (Allen) Smith in Newport. He grew up in Hyde Park and graduated from Lamoille Central Academy in 1948. He attended UVM and graduated from Albany Business College in 1951, then graduated from Bryant College in 1952. He served his country in military intelligence from 1952-1954. He married Alison Cleary on May 10, 1953. They have three children, Kirk (wife, Lynn), Kelly (wife, Jina), and Kindrea Bolinger (husband, James); as well as nine grandchildren, Aaron, Kalyn, Kenly, Kristen, Jessica, Allison, Austin, Audra, and Athan; and four great-grandchildren, Svana, Addison, Carter, Kiara, and one due in July. He worked for Ruberoid Co. of Caledonia, N.Y., from 1954-1957. He then transferred to American Smelting of Black Lake, Quebec from 1957-1964. In 1965, he moved his family to Shelburne and worked for IBM of Essex Junction until his retirement in 1992. His family will miss his sage advice, both solicited and unsolicited. He loved music and even in advanced Alzheimer’s, he could remember all the words to his favorite hymns. He adored his wife and never wanted to be far from her. They would’ve celebrated 60 years of marriage next month. He was predeceased by his parents; his sisters, Gwen Gabbeitt (husband, Tom) and Nita Raymond (husband, Lyle); and a granddaughter, Charity Bolinger. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Trinity Baptist Church building project, 300 Trinity Dr., Williston, Vt. 05495.
