Town officials: remember civic obligation

Developers really can’t be blamed for behaving like developers. But town governance officials who champion developers’ interests over those of the taxpayers who elected them are confusing their authority with their civic obligation. Shelburne is a rural community that intends to stay that way and continues to attract residents seeking a secure rural lifestyle. Over more than the last decade, a considerable amount of debate and policy development has established clear guidelines for managing changes that might threaten this aspect of the town’s character. Current officials need to renew their understanding of these guidelines as well as their obligations to tax-paying and voting constituents.
