Norma “Nomi” Unsworth died peacefully on Nov. 4, 2012, in Shell Point Retirement Community in Ft. Myers. She was born Norma Christine Winberg on Aug. 9, 1919, in Worcester, Mass., the only child of Nils A. and Ruth E. J. Winberg. Nomi was always proud of her Swedish heritage. She graduated from Middlebury College in 1941. In her freshman year, she met her classmate and future husband, Ray Unsworth, who gave her the nickname “Nomi.” Ray and Nomi were married in Worcester, Mass., on June 17, 1944. Nomi followed Ray to his Coast Guard stations in Key West, Fla., and Alameda, Calif. When Ray sailed on the troop ship U.S.S. Gen. D.E. Aultman for France and then toward Japan, Nomi returned to her parents’ home to await the birth of her first child. After the war, Ray and Nomi settled in his hometown of Burlington. While Ray worked at the E.B. & A.C. Whiting Company and later started his own businesses, Nomi was a homemaker (in the best sense of the word) and raised their four children. In 1959, they built their modernistic home, “Upswept,” on Spear Street in South Burlington. In their retirement years, Nomi and Ray enjoyed their home in Key West, Fla. They spent the last nine years at Shell Point, first in an independent apartment, and later getting wonderful care. Nomi was faithful as a daughter, wife, mother, friend, citizen, and Christian. One of the highlights of her and Ray’s lives was being delegates to the 1980 Republican Convention, which nominated Ronald Reagan, and then going to the Inaugural Ball. She was a former active member of North Avenue Alliance Church, was involved in several Bible studies, and had a long prayer list. Nomi entertained friends and extended family frequently and graciously. She adored her 13 grandchildren, and spent as much time with them as she could. She loved Moody Beach in Maine, and visited there once a year for almost every year of her life. She loved chocolate, toasted croissants, and the color sea-foam green. Among many others, she leaves son, Stephen Unsworth of Shelburne, his wife, Shona, and their children, James, Katherine, and Rachel. She was predeceased by her husband, Ray, in 2010.
