Philip W. Swanson – Shelburne

Philip “Red” William Swanson answered a peaceful last call on July 16, 2013, at The Arbors in Shelburne, with loving family at his side. Phil was born in Milford, Conn., on July 28, 1928, and spent the first half of his life there. Phil was very proud of being a professional fire fighter for 25 years with the Milford Fire Department. He continued this commitment to public service by volunteering for fire departments everywhere he has lived since then, including Plymouth, Vt., Woodstock, Vt., Volusia County, Fla., and most recently for the Malletts Bay Fire Department in Colchester, Vt. He loved the fire service, and was committed even in retirement to doing what he could to support his own and other fire fighters’ professional development. He was a longtime member of the New England Fire Marshall’s Association. In addition to his fire service, he was a Deputy Windsor (VT) County Sheriff and a part-time officer for the Woodstock, Vt., Police Department. Phil and his second wife, Rosalind Schang Swanson, celebrated their 45-year wedding anniversary last fall. Roz currently lives at Shelburne Bay Senior Living, in Shelburne. Some of Phil’s happiest times were living in the Plymouth Valley in the heart of Vermont. There he and Roz built a log cabin and then a log house, farmed the land, and raised chickens and bees. Phil was a skilled carpenter and did much of the work on these homes. In Plymouth, Phil also gave his time to Farm and Wilderness Camps, helping to train staff on truck driving safety. Phil’s hobbies and interests included model trains and steam engines. Phil and Roz were avid travelers, and went on a variety of trips, both rustic and posh. Together they drove across this country in an outfitted pick-up truck. In contrast to this, with Roz’s parents, they flew the Concorde across the Atlantic to Europe and sailed back on the QE2. Phil had quite a life! There will be a celebration of Phil’s life at 2 pm on Saturday, Aug. 3 in the Great Room at Shelburne Bay Senior Living in Shelburne. The family would like to express their deep appreciation for the wonderful care given to Phil by staff and caregivers at Shelburne Bay Senior Living, the VNA Adult Day programs and VNA Hospice program, and The Arbors in Shelburne. Phil was lucky to have known each of you. In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to your local fire department.
