The trustees of the Pierson Library are pleased to announce that Lara Keenan has been hired to assume the role of library director. Keenan is joining the Pierson following her position of assistant librarian at the Essex Free Library and will start on Aug. 1. Library patrons are encouraged to stop by the front desk to welcome her when they next visit the Pierson and at Shelburne Day at the Aug. 17 Farmer’s Market.
Keenan brings excellent experience, credentials, and positive demeanor to the helm of the Pierson Library. Born and raised in Chittenden County, Lara has spent her lifetime connecting Vermonters of all ages with a wide variety of resources. She worked in an independent bookstore, taught high school English, served as a librarian and events coordinator at VSAC, and worked most recently as a librarian at the Essex Free Library. “Bringing people together to discover resources and create meaningful experiences feeds me both professionally and personally,” Keenan offered. “I’m excited to discover the treasures in Shelburne’s community and find ways to meet the needs of the library and its patrons. I look forward to sharing my enthusiasm with the staff and patrons of the Pierson community.” Keenan also serves on the Artistic Direction Committee for the Essex Community Players, works as Lead Foley Artist for the BTV Radio Players and serves as Vice-President of the Vermont Library Association Public Libraries section. She received her Masters of Library and Information Science at Syracuse University in 2011 and is a graduate of Essex High School and Saint Michael’s College.
The trustees are very grateful to the current staff of the library who have maintained strong circulation and led terrific programs in the absence of a director. Kip Roberson departed in April to assume the role of director of the Rueben Hoar Library in Massachusetts.
Keenan was selected through an extensive search process. The trustees of the library are indebted to the service of the search committee, which was comprised of representatives from the Board of Trustees, the Friends of the Pierson Library, the Town of Shelburne, library staff, as well as a community member.
