I was very disappointed to learn that the House Farm Bill passed, because it includes Rep. Steve King of Iowa’s amendment which could repeal existing state laws pertaining to agriculture. These changes could have a negative effect on the health and well-being of people, animals, and our environment.
I would like to publicly thank Senator Patrick Leahy, who has pledged to fight this dangerous amendment and work to remove the harmful King provision from the final version of the farm bill.
Vermont has been a leader in the stewardship of resources and humane treatment for animals, and that has always made me proud. I fear that, if the farm bill passes with Rep. King’s provision, our state—and the entire nation—will be regressing in our efforts to create a better society for us all.
