Helen M. Vervoort, 94, died peacefully on August 8, 2013 in her home at Wake Robin. Known to her family as Buddy, Helen always had a smile on her face and a lilt in her step. She was born on Sept. 1, 1918 in Hamilton, Ohio and grew up in Rockville Centre on Long Island. From the age of six Helen loved dancing. After high school she attended Chalef Russian School of Dance in New Your City for four years. Helen became an accomplished, professional dancer, and instructor in ballet, tap, toe, and ballroom dancing. Her grandest moment was dancing with Fred Astaire while part of the Sinclair Sextet. Helen was a member of Dance Masters of America, NY State Dance Assoc. and Catholic Actors Guild. She also owned and operated the Helen M. Tighe Dance Studio. Helen and her husband, Edward L Vervoort were married in 1941 and raised their family in Syosset, N.Y. They were all active in scouting, hiking, and camping. Helen was a loving wife and mother, an exceptional homemaker, and an instructor for the Nassau County Home Extension. She loved working in her flower garden and shared her connection with nature with all around her. As a person who always wanted to help others, she became a volunteer with the Nassau County Home Health Aides. Helen and Ed retired in West Newbury, Vt. in 1974 where they became active members of the community and Helen was a member of the Women’s Fellowship. Each winter they traveled west in their RV to visit their children and grandson. Along the way they loved hiking in the National Parks and Forests. Helen and Ed were one of the first couples to move into Wake Robin CCRC in 1993, where they volunteered at the Health Center and helped create the original hiking trails.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband Edward and sister Marcela Manger and is survived by her children, Ed Vervoort, Jr., and Judy Chaddick; grandson Jeremy and his wife Amber, great grandson, Justin Dylan; sister, Ronnie Horn; nephews Michael Horn and children, Mike, Jr., Kevin, and Johnny; John Horn and wife, Megg and children; niece Nancy DiPietro and husband, Ray, and children Laura Vaccaro and Steven Vaccaro, his wife, and children.
