Aug 4 A Vergennes Day SCVergennes Day celebrates its 32nd year on Saturday, Aug. 24. Hosted and sponsored by the Addison County Chamber of Commerce and area businesses, Vergennes Day is a celebration of city and community and can be enjoyed by all ages.

The event kicks off Friday at 7pm with a street dance in City Park, featuring music by The Hitmen. Saturday activities take place 7 am-4 pm and culminate at dusk with the lighting of Otter Creek Falls (the falls will be lit every night through Labor Day and can be viewed from MacDonough Drive or Mechanic Street). The day begins with a pancake breakfast at the Vergennes Fire Station and the Little City 5K Walk and 10K Race (starting in front of the Vergennes Opera House). More information and registration is available at

The bandstand in City Park will be occupied throughout the day by several musical groups including Vergennes City Band and LC Jazz. City Park is also the site of more than 75 crafters and vendors offering fine handcrafts, locally made products, food, and more (the Lions will be selling barbeques chicken!). And the Rotary’s Rubber Duckie Race is a tradition at the Basin! Don’t forget to purchase your tickets at the Rotary’s booth.

For youngsters, the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad and Safe Kids Addison County will be at the fire station 11 am-2 pm to fit bike helmets; they will also give away a limited supply of helmets! While there, kids can enjoy the ever-popular Bubble Pit, and parents can get Child ID cards and first-aid kits for their children. At 12:30 pm, Bixby Library will hold its “Books for Bikes” drawing, sponsored by the library and Vergennes Rotary.

Vergennes Union High School (VUHS) is the site of the car, tractor, truck, and engine show. See this nostalgic display and vote for your favorite! Watch the Champlain Valley Flyers fly radio-controlled planes – and stick around to witness Vergennes’ Police Chief Merkel demonstrate his dog Akido’s abilities!
