Florence A. Doerner passed away peacefully in her residence at the Shores at Shelburne Bay in Shelburne on Aug. 26, 2013. Florence Alice Andres was born Aug. 28, 1914, in Bridgeport, Conn., the youngest of five children to Eugenie Lombele and Charles Alfred Andres. She graduated from Stratford High School, and was employed by the Grant Company in Bridgeport. On July 3, 1941, Florence and Egon Doerner began a marriage partnership that would span 62 years. Their son, Karl, was born in 1952, and the family moved to Dewitt, N.Y., in 1954. Florence applied herself to the role of homemaker and mom, working for a time as a teachers’ aide and resource librarian for the Jamesville-DeWitt schools. Egon died in 2003, and Florence missed him every minute of every day. She continued to live in their home on East Colvin Street, caring for her gardens and mowing her own lawn until the age of 94. In 2011, she moved to Shelburne. Florence is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Karl and Judith Doerner of Burlington; grandson, Ian Doerner, also of Burlington; and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. We remember her as a strong woman who relinquished her independence reluctantly, but with good grace. We will miss her smile, her resilience and her resolve. We are forever grateful for the help and support of our neighbors and friends in Dewitt, which enabled her to live for so long in her own home. Heartfelt thanks and appreciation go to the nurses and caregivers at the Shores at Shelburne Bay, whose diligence and loving care eased the final months of a long and fruitful life.
