Marthe Kruse – Shelburne

Marthe Jacqueline (Richer) Kruse passed away on Sept. 12, 2013 in Shelburne. Born in Montreal on Nov. 24, 1927 Marthe is survived by her sister, Gaetane Richer, also of Montreal; sister, Irene, and brother, Gilles, predeceased her. Marthe left school to enter the workforce at an early age. She eventually landed a job as a secretary at the CBC. As a young woman, she enjoyed dancing and the big band music halls in Montreal. She met her Danish husband, Henrik Kruse, in the Laurentians and moved briefly to Copenhagen after their marriage. She returned to Montreal in 1956 to give birth to her first child, Marie Benedicte. Her second child, Christian, was born in Staten Island, N.Y., in 1960, where her husband worked for a Scandinavian shipping firm. Marthe moved back to Montreal with her family in time to enjoy the world’s fair, Expo ‘67. Her husband settled into a career at Alcan Aluminum, but shortly after his return to Canada bought land in Westford, Vt. Henrik’s interest in forestry and woodworking and Marthe’s love of gardening led to a permanent residency in Westford in the 1970’s. Marthe enjoyed many happy years there living close to nature. After her husband’s passing in 1999, Marthe moved to Burlington, and then to Wake Robin in Shelburne where she enjoyed bird watching, the opera, and several close friendships. Marthe is survived by her son, Christian Kruse and wife, Eva; daughter, Benedicte Dodge and husband, Bill; four grandchildren, Christian, Celeste, Nathan and Madeleine; grandson Chris’s wife, Joanna Kruse; great-granddaughter, Stella; and many relatives in Quebec. In respect for Marthe’s wishes, there will be no commemorative service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wake Robin, 200 Wake Robin Drive, Shelburne, VT 05482
