Paula E. Schmitt, 74, died peacefully Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013, after a brief illness following a long battle with lymphoma and leukemia. She was born in Pittsfield, Mass., July 26, 1939, the daughter of Helen and Edward P. Shaffer. Paula graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1957. While working as a secretary for General Electric, she met and married Charles E. Schmitt in 1962 in Pittsfield, Mass. They moved to Shelburne, Vt., in 1972. She graduated from the University of Vermont as an RN in 1982, and worked at MCHV as an IV Nurse. After retiring at age 60, she volunteered at Fletcher Allen and Fanny Allen Hospitals. She and her husband traveled extensively, spending summers on Lake Champlain and their cottage in Connecticut. Among her survivors is her son, Dr. Charles Schmitt and wife, Kimberley, of Shelburne.
