Shelburne Orchards announces Pie Fest winners

Thirty gorgeous apple pies were displayed around a large copper apple brandy still in the Cider House at Shelburne Orchards Sunday, Sept. 29 for the 12th annual Pie Fest. Judges Stacy Fraser (Test Kitchen Manager at Eating Well), David Hugo (Owner of Starry Night Café and Head Chef at the Inn at Shelburne Farms), and Jodi Whalen (Co-owner of August First and Stacks) carefully noted the quality of each pie crust, filling, and overall appearance as the audience enjoyed entertainment by the Hokum Bros. After tallying the judges’ scores, Shelburne Orchards Owner Nick Cowles congratulated winners in the following categories: First Place “Apple of My Eye Pie” was awarded to Nicolai Blood, “Best Appearance” went to Victoria Bevz, “Best Crust” was given to Linda Post, and “Best Filling” went to Nicole Liscio. The first annual “Kevin is Heaven” Award winner Kevin Clayton, owner of Village Coffee Shop in Shelburne, was recognized for helping out around the Orchard.

More apple events are planned for the season. On Thursday and Friday, Oct. 17 and 18, seniors will be able to grab apples from the ground at the discounted price of $10 per bushel during Senior Citizens’ Days. Truckload & Carboy Saturday will offer discounted pricing for apples on the ground as well as the opportunity to purchase a special blend of apples for hard cider is slated for Saturday, Oct. 19.
