In support of the CVU turf fields project

I am writing to show my support for the CVU turf fields project. These synthetic turf fields (with bleachers and lights) will provide tremendous benefits for many years to come to our local student-athletes of all ages and all of the fans who cheer them on by attending their practices and games. Players on numerous CVU teams and clubs (soccer, football, field hockey, lacrosse, cheerleading, ultimate Frisbee, track & field, health & wellness classes, among others) as well as local youth sports teams are in need of permanent playing fields with safe and predictable conditions for their practices and games. Currently, the too few grass fields at CVU struggle to withstand the rigors of the practice and game schedules for these teams resulting in cancelled practices, injuries and relocated games.

Way back in my day, our high school and youth football (yes, it had been invented) and soccer teams were not allowed to use our ‘game’ field except for game days which made every home game feel like an away game. Even then, these fields were still often unplayable. How nice it would have been (then and now) to allow our teams to practice and play our games on the same fields with durable, predictable turf. Alas, my time has come and gone but we can still provide for our current and future student-athletes by supporting this worthy and important project.

This project is a collaborative effort. As you know, many members of our community are diligently raising funds needed to complete a portion of this project via raffles, donations, grants, etc.  In addition, a bond approved by the CVU School Board to raise money from Shelburne, Charlotte, Hinesburg, St. George, and Williston voters is on the Nov. 5 ballot. This upcoming vote is a vital step toward making this much-needed project a reality.

Please consider paying it forward by showing your support for our students, school, and community for years to come by voting in favor of the CVU turf fields project.

Bill Storey, Shelburne
