Myers final Wind Ensemble concert

David Myers directed his final Wind Ensemble concert at Shelburne Community School (SCS) this week. He is concluding 30 years of teaching band at SCS where he also attended school and played in the middle school band. During the final piece of the concert this past Wednesday, he brought out his trumpet (still the same one he played in 8th grade at SCS) and joined the band to play along with them. The Wind Ensemble was dressed in festive Hawaiian shirts and played a repertoire of music that highlighted their advanced abilities.
In the audience were over 20 alumni of the SCS band program. They were there to show their appreciation for Myers and to join together after the concert to present him with a printed book of letters from his students reflecting on the role his teaching has played in their lives. Over 50 current and former students wrote in for the book to share their thanks and stories of the central role his band directing played in their lives.
Former student Sidney Hilker read the dedication of the book while Zachary Wiemer and David Kerr each read an excerpt to share with the audience. Myers commitment to the saying that he often repeats “it is all about the kids” was reflected in the faces of the current and former students who were there to honor him.
